The lights are dimmed. Enter John the Evangelist, standing to one side near the Advent Wreath. The first giant Advent candle comes on, dimly illuminating the figure.

Dim the lights. A long blue silk cloth is unrolled across the “stage” and shaken to create water-like ripples.

And God said

Isaiah

Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.[Isaiah 7.14]

But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.[Micah 5.2]

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns."[Isaiah 52.7]

Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight!

There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

Holy Scripture

In the sixth month the ange Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the Virgin's name was Mary. Hail, thou that are highly favoured, the Lord is with thee.[Luke 1:28]

Mary

What manner of salutation is this?[Luke 1:29]

Gabriel

Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favour with God. And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a Son, and shalt call his name Jesus.

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest;

And the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David,

And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever;

And of his kingdom there shall be no end.[Luke 1:30-33]

Mary

Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.[Luke 1:38]

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. [Luke 1:46-49]

Enter Joseph. He walks up to Mary and looks at her. She stares raptly at Gabriel.Joseph walks away and sits down, thinking hard.

Gabriel

Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. [Matthew 1:20-21]
