Emmanuel Community Church

Inter-generational Lectionary Study;

Sundays from 10:0 to 10:45 in the Board Room

Opening

Opening prayer by leader, or invite another participant to pray, or us:

Almighty God, who has caused all Holy Scripture to be written for our learning, open our ears and hearts today to learn from your word and from one another, we ask in Jesus' Name. Amen

Set the calendar-clock to the right date. Epiphany is the “showing forth” of Christ. Just as the gentile wise men came to know Christ by seeking him out by following his star, we follow His ministry and his miracles, and hear the story of how He called his apostles. Walking in their footsteps, we too are called to show Christ forth to others who may be seeking Him.

Today, the Gospel reviews for us ....

Review of Last Week

What was the sermon on? - Jonah, the runaway Prophet. Every one among us has his Ninevah. Our actions don't affect just ourselves, but others too. God puts people ahead of things.

What was the Gospel lesson? - The calling of Peter and Andrew, James and John, on the shores of Lake Gallilee.

Did anyone have any insights about...

  1. What dilemmas or hardships do you face, that you wish you didn't have to face?

  2. What might God intend you to accomplish through the hardships that you face?

  3. Whom do you see, as deserving God's condemnation in the way that Ninevah deserved condemnation?

  4. When has God surprised you by not punishing someone?

  5. When have you walked in the footsteps of Christ, by showing mercy?

Pew-work Hand-outs

“Pew-work” is like Home-work, except that it is done in the pews, instead of being done at home. Because it is focussed on the readings (as the sermon, presumably, also is) it can be done during the sermon to help the listener concentrate. Or, it can be done while waiting for everyone else to finish their communion. It isn't done during prayers, or hymns, or the readings, because

During the Readings, we listen
